Although Armenia has not access to the sea, it has a magnificent pearl, which is a real treasure of all Armenians. The lake of Sevan is the largest lake in Armenia, which is situated in Gegharkunik Province of Armenia. The lake of Sevan is very unique and it is one of the largest fresh-water high altitude lakes in the world. And Armenia is the home of fresh-water Sevan and many other high mountain lakes and rivers. The total surface area of the lake is about 1250 km2.
The lake of Sevan is the wonder of the nature, which is situated in two inter-mountainous depressions and has two parts: Big and Small Sevan. The lake has numerous beaches. One of the most popular is a 2.5km stretch on the northern shore. The queen lake of Armenia is a stunning body of water. The lake of Sevan never fails to impress with its unpredictable moods, reflected in its jet-back to aquamarine colors.
The aquamarine Sevan is very famous within the tourists with its historical and cultural monument Sevanavank. The monastery of Sevanavank is located near the town of Sevan. Formerly the monastery of Sevan was located on an island. But later the fall of the water level turned it into a peninsula. When the water level fell many cultural treasures were discovered. In the result of excavations many archeological artifacts were found, even 2000 years of age and older. Some of the artifacts are as old as the early Bronze Age. Currently they display in Yerevan.
